The BBC board want to migrate the best bits of 6 music to other stations? Who do they think they’re kidding?
OK - so the BBC board think that by closing 6 music they can migrate the best bits of the station to Radio 1 & 2. What utter tosh! Are the board so really out of touch? Do they actually listen to any of these stations - Radio 1, 2 or 6 music or are they safely cocooned in the safety of Radio 3 & 4?
I may sound selfish but I imagine that most people like me listen to radio during the day - particularly the working day. Do they really expect us to believe that if we put Radio 1 or 2 on between the hours of 9.00am and 5.30pm that we will hear at least 3 hours of 6 music style programming? I don't think so.
What they really mean is that anything they deem worth saving from 6 music will be hidden away at 10.00pm on other stations, meaning we're stuck having to listen to the blandness of Radio 1 in the vain hope we'll hear a Cold War Kids or Bombay Bicycle Club track in between the mediocrity of The Black Eyed Peas, Mika and JLS or we sit there hoping Steve Wright or Ken Bruce will slip in a few retro Smiths or Jam tunes (god forbid they venture out of the popular end of vaguely alternative music for fear of upsetting your typical Mavis of Chichester type listener).
You know it's true. They really don't give a sh*t but what they fail to see is that this means so much to so many people. The demographic for 6 music is potentially huge - from people who grew up in the 50s and 60s through to teenagers discovering new music and experiencing the bands that influenced them. Where else can you hear Lulu, Psychic TV and The Incredible String Band alongside Gorillaz, Grandmaster Flash and Madness?
So wave goodbye to gems from the BBC archive. No more introductions to classic sessions you've never heard from Pentangle, Bowie, Half Man Half Biscuit or The Fall. Wave goodbye to laughing with Shaun and Adam & Joe. Say so long to Steve, Lauren and everyone else who makes the day bearable. And you can forget about dancing round the kitchen to the Funk & Soul of Craig Charles or the weirdness of Stuart Maconies Freak Zone.
Don't let it happen. We've got one chance. Let's raise awareness and spread the word. We love 6 music and we won't let you take it away from us.
